Chapter 7: Ragdoll

"Don't let her near the locket," I said.

"What?"

"I'm coming down. Twenty minutes."

I was there in fifteen.

Ben let me in through the side door, since it was Sunday and the front was locked.

He was in jeans and the green cardigan, with a kitten bottle sticking out of his pocket.

The box was in the kennel room, lined with a towel.

Three ragdoll kittens were asleep in it in a heap, cream and gray, with faces.

The fourth was not asleep.

She sat on the floor in front of the top kennel, perfectly upright, staring at the tabby's collar.

Her eyes were enormous and very, very blue.

When I came in, she turned her head and looked at me.

"Hi, bestie," Jenna said.

Ben didn't react.

He was refilling a water bowl with his back to us.

I crouched down slowly.

"You're kidding," I whispered.

"Do I look like I'm kidding?" She lifted one fluffy paw and examined it. "Look at this. I can't even make a fist."

"What's that?" Ben said over his shoulder.

"I said she's cute."

"She's a menace," Ben said. "She bit my sister's thumb twice. She won't eat unless you put the bowl right here, in front of the tabby, so she can watch."

"Sounds about right," I said.

Up in the kennel, the tabby was flattened in the back corner, growling low, never taking her eyes off the kitten.

Jenna smiled up at me with her tiny face.

"So that's it," she said softly. "The locket. That's what you were so smug about. Granny's little secret."

My stomach dropped.

"I've been sitting here all day doing the math," she said. "I'm a kitten, Annie. I'm not an idiot."

I picked her up by the scruff, gently, the way a mother cat would, and set her in the box with her brothers and sisters.

She climbed right out again.
