Chapter 4: Down on One Knee

On Monday at 6:58 a.m., with my badge on and my hair still wet, I got a text from a number I had saved the day before.

"Day one. Eat something."

I stared at it in the ER locker room.

Then I ate half a granola bar standing up, and I felt my wrist the whole time.

I had flown to Denver on Saturday and held my sister's baby shower together with a glue gun and a smile.

I told her about Edgar in the kitchen, in four sentences, and she cried harder than I did.

Now I was back at work, and the only thing that wasn't a problem was the patients.

At 10:15 a man came through the ambulance doors with an armful of white roses.

It was Edgar.

He wore the charcoal blazer and the grin, and he walked into the middle of the emergency department.

"Gin."

"I'm working."

"I know. I called ahead."

"You called ahead?"

"I told them it was an emergency."

The nurse at triage stared at him.

Two paramedics stopped with a gurney.

A man in a waiting chair held an ice pack to his head and turned to watch.

Edgar dropped to one knee on the linoleum.

He took a velvet box out of his pocket.

"Ten years," he said, loud enough for every curtain on the floor to hear. "I've been a coward for ten years. I should have given you a date the day I gave you the ring, and I didn't, and that's on me."

He opened the box.

The new diamond was twice the size of the old one.

"Marry me, Gin. This Saturday. I'll book the courthouse myself."

Someone near the supply cart said, "Oh my God."
