Chapter 4: The Program

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

He had tried to log in.

At two in the morning, after the party, he had tried to get back into my account.

I typed, "What?"

The dots came up right away.

"Nothing. I was checking mine and it said something about yours. Weird glitch. Night Sunny."

It didn't say anything about mine.

It couldn't.

I turned the phone face down and lay there until the birds started.

At nine, somebody knocked on the front door.

Trent stood on the porch with two iced coffees.

Oat milk, two pumps of caramel. My order since freshman year.

"Peace offering," he said. "You left early. You seemed off."

"I was tired."

"You're always tired." He grinned and held the coffee out. "Can I come in?"

My mother had gone to work.

I stepped back and let him in.

He sat at our kitchen table like he'd sat there ten thousand times.

"So, about that glitch," he said. "I just want to make sure you're not locked out."

"The portal's super strict. If something's wrong, you're stuck with it."

"Nothing's wrong."

"Let me just look." He held out his hand. "Two seconds."

My phone was on the table between us.

He reached for it.

I picked it up first and put it in my back pocket.

His hand stayed in the air for a second.

Then he laughed and ran it through his hair.

"Okay, weirdo. Keep your secrets."

"I changed my password because I got a scam email," I said. "That's all."

"Smart."

He looked relieved.

He drank his coffee and talked about the dorms at Bradford.
