Chapter 14: One Hard Question

Annette had the coffee made before any of us came out of our rooms.

She set four mugs on the table without a word about the radio, and Stephanie turned very red.

"Eat," Annette said, and put a plate of scrambled eggs in front of each of us.

Then she took her own plate to the porch and shut the door behind her.

Shane sat across from me with his hair still flat on one side.

He ate two bites and put the fork down.

The clock over the stove said seven forty, and the board would meet at ten to ask for his arrest.

"We have two hours," I said.

"Then say it now," he said. "Whatever you were going to say last night before we stopped talking."

"Say what?"

"The thing about Melanie that you swallowed."

I turned my mug a quarter turn on the table.

"You carried my bouquet," I said.

"I did."

"You knew about Melanie for a year, and you let me pick out the napkins."

"I know."

"I'm not going to pretend that's gone because you're good in bed."

Stephanie choked on her coffee and found something to look at on the wall.

Shane didn't flinch.

"I don't want it gone," he said. "I want you to be able to say it to my face every time it comes back."

"That's a lot to ask of me."

"It's less than I've asked of myself."

That landed somewhere I hadn't expected.

I looked at his big hands lying flat on Annette's table.

"Your turn," I said. "I know you have one."

He was quiet for a while.

"For two years I've watched you sit at his side at every dinner," he said. "You laughed at his jokes and signed his checks."

"They were joint checks."

"You never asked him one hard question. Not about the money, not about where he was on Thursdays, not about why Melanie was always at your house when he was there."
