The night before the gala, the house was too quiet.
Pip was gone, back inside the Gilt Room with a fresh bruise and a story.
Ilse had gone to bed at nine with her door shut and a gun in the drawer.
Oren stood at the bedroom window with his hands flat on the cold glass and watched the black water.
"Come away from there," Benedikt said.
"I'm thinking."
"You're shaking."
Oren pressed his palms harder to the glass.
"I'm not."
Arms came around him from behind.
Warm, broad, smelling of cedar and lemon.
Oren leaned back into the chest without deciding to.
"Tomorrow," he whispered.
"Tomorrow."
"If it goes wrong-"
Benedikt's arms tightened.
"It will not go wrong."
"But if."
"Then I'll still have had this." Benedikt's mouth pressed to his temple. "But it will not."
He turned Oren in his arms and kissed him.
Slow, deep, unhurried, a kiss that went on until Oren's knees went soft.
When it ended he was holding on to the front of Benedikt's shirt.
