For a moment the Gilt Room did not make a sound.
Then Egon laughed.
It was a polite, dry, delighted laugh, and he came down off the dais with his hands out.
"My dear Benedikt. A flourish, a grand reveal. I confess, I did not expect the voice."
"You never expect anything you haven't bought."
"Perhaps." Egon stopped at the edge of Room Nine. "You buy the room? With what? This house is mine. Everyone in it is mine."
"Not the omega."
"Oren is a gift of the house."
Egon's smile thinned.
"Oren is a man who walked out of it."
Oren stood.
His legs were solid under him.
He took one step around the table to stand at Benedikt's shoulder, and looked up at the dais, at the booths, at four hundred masked faces.
"Ask me," he said. "Anyone. Ask me what I owe."
Nobody spoke.
"I owe nothing." His voice carried. "I never did. My father's note was forged. It is dated four days after my mother died."
A murmur went around the balconies.
"Marta Sabin," Oren said. "A hospital aide at St. Brendan's. She took a chart to a detective who was on this man's payroll, and eleven days later she was dead on a stairwell."
