Chapter 8: Nest

"No," Benedikt said.

Oren felt the word through the knot, through his spine, through the flesh between them.

"No?"

"You set the rule, not me." Benedikt's lips brushed his nape and did not bite.

"No bite while the paper is open. Ask me when you've burned it."

"I'm asking now."

Benedikt's hand spread over his stomach.

"You're in heat."

"I know what I'm in."

Oren's jaw clenched.

"I'll hear it again when you aren't."

Oren groaned and ground back onto the swollen knot, furious.

"I hate you."

"I know."

Oren shut his eyes.

"I hate that you're right."

"That's better."

The knot went down after an hour.

They slept, tangled and sticky, in the morning light.

On the second day Oren woke alone.

The heat gripped his belly again.

The bed was empty and cold, and for one wild second he thought: he's gone.

Then he smelled him.

On the pillow, on the sheets, in the shirt hanging over the bedpost.

He grabbed it and dragged it to his face.

Cedar and lemon.

His whole body eased.

When Benedikt came back in with a tray, Oren had pulled every shirt out of the closet.

He had built a ring of them on the bed, with three sweaters and a coat.

He sat in the middle of it, naked, with a navy cashmere sweater around his neck.
