Chapter 9: Nine

Benedikt had known about the vial for nine days.

He had taken it from the silk on the third night of the heat, while Oren slept in the nest with one arm flung over his eyes.

He had stood in the dark hall with the red wax in his palm and felt the whole world go quiet.

Then he had taken it to Ilse.

Now she stood at the top of his stairs on Monday morning with the thing held up to the window.

Oren stood in the doorway with his face gone white.

"Ilse," Benedikt said, from the bedroom. "Give it to me."

"It is a nerve agent." Her voice was dry.

"Three drops will stop a heart, and the report would say a heart attack. He gave this to you."

"Yes."

Ilse's eyes did not leave the vial.

"He gave it to the boy to give to you."

"Yes."

Ilse's mouth thinned.

"And you took him to bed anyway."

Benedikt came out into the hall in his trousers, his bare chest still marked from Oren's nails.

He took the vial out of her fingers.

"Go home," he said, gently. "It's my mess."

She looked at Oren.

He looked back, wide-eyed, with a cashmere sweater half off one shoulder.

"I didn't do it," Oren said, hoarse.
