Chapter 14: Good Morning

I went up the stairs and into the guest room and sat on the narrow bed with my boots still on.

The house made its night noises.

I heard him lock the front door, and check the back, and stand at the bottom of the stairs.

"Good night, Rhona," Rhett said.

It was the first time he had ever said it.

I let the quiet sit for as long as I could stand.

Then I opened the door, and he was still there, one hand on the rail, looking up.

"I want to sleep alone," I said.

"Then you will."

"Those were my rules. Separate rooms."

"They were your rules," he said. "And mine. I'll keep them."

He turned to go.

I came down three steps.

"You're really going to hold me to it?"

He stopped.

He turned his head, and the light from the kitchen caught the scar through his eyebrow.

"I broke them once in a garage," Rhett said. "Tonight I won't touch you unless you ask."

"That's cruel."

"It's honest."

"Rhett."

"I mean it. I'll stand here till morning."

I came down the rest of the stairs.

I put my hand flat on his chest, over the club patch, and felt his heart pounding under it.

"Ask me," he said, rough.

"Take me to bed."

"Whose?"

"Yours," I said. "I've been sleeping in it for fourteen months. Don't make me say it twice."

He picked me up.

I locked my arms around his neck, and he carried me up the stairs slowly, with his face against my hair.

In his room he sat me on the edge of the bed and knelt to pull off my boots.

He unlaced them one at a time and set them side by side.

"I was afraid of this," he said. "Of you looking at me and seeing it all."

"Seeing what?"

"How much I want you."

I took his face in both hands.

"I can see it," I said. "I'm not going anywhere. Come here."

He kissed me, and it was nothing like the garage.

He kissed me slowly, with his hand curved at the back of my head and his thumb moving at my jaw.

I pulled his shirt up and over his head, and found the new stitches on his shoulder, and pressed my mouth to them.
