Chapter 18: Wire Brush

Rhett got there at two in the morning, and he didn't say a word to anyone.

He parked the Road King by the gate and walked straight to the green truck.

He stood in front of the door with his hands at his sides.

I had never seen him that quiet.

In the club he went cold when he was angry.

Tonight he just went still.

"Who knows you're here?" he asked.

"Pia, Dahlia, my father," I said. "And whoever followed me."

"Nobody followed you."

"Somebody painted my truck."

"Then they were here before you."

He turned and looked at Dahlia, who sat on an overturned crate by the shop door with Pia's jacket around her shoulders.

She flinched.

"I won't touch you," Rhett said. "You came to her, not me. That's the only reason you're breathing in my county."

"I know," Dahlia whispered.

"Pia gave you a cot?"

"The one in the back."

"Then you stay on it," he said. "Nobody leaves this yard tonight."

Pia leaned on the doorframe with her arms folded.

"You're the first biker I've ever liked," she said.

"I'll try to ruin it by morning," Rhett said.

She snorted, and some of the tightness went out of the yard.

Pia took Dahlia inside, and Gasket followed them with his tail up.

Rhett didn't sleep.

He found a wire brush in Pia's shop and a can of paint stripper.

When the first gray light came up over the pines, he was kneeling beside my truck with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

He scrubbed the black paint off the door a letter at a time.
