Chapter 19: Coffee Cans
The buyer from Phoenix arrived at the diner on Friday at noon, in loafers.
He was about fifty, with a laser measure clipped to his belt and a lawyer from Flagstaff walking half a step behind him.
Birdie served them both coffee and said nothing.
That was how I knew she had a plan.
The diner was fuller than I had ever seen it.
Every booth was taken, and people stood along the wall and out the door onto the gravel.
Nobody had been told to come.
Nineteen men in undershirts and bare-armed vests sat along the counter with their elbows touching.
"Ma'am, we're here to walk the property," the lawyer said. "Mr. Maguire has authorized the sale of the whole parcel. The diner, the two bays, the lot."
"Has he?" Birdie said.
"The closing's at three."
"Then you've got three hours," she said. "Eat something."
The buyer glanced around at the crowd and shifted on his stool.
The bell over the door rang, and Dutch walked in.
He had shaved, and he wore a clean pressed shirt and the good silver ring on every finger.
I had not seen him since the flatbed.
He didn't look at me.
He sat down at a table by the door, alone, with his hat in front of him, and he folded his hands.
The room went quiet.
He had come to watch us lose.
"Birdie," he said pleasantly. "It's been thirty years, and I'm sorry it comes to this."
"Is that right."
"I'd have given you a fair price on the diner, if you'd stayed out of my business. Now I'll take what the market gives me."
Birdie wiped her hands on her apron.
She walked around the end of the counter and stood in the middle of the floor.
She was not a tall woman, and she was not a quiet one.
"I'd like to make an offer on the parcel," she said.
