Chapter 5: Jesse's Floor

My key didn't turn.

I stood on my own porch at ten o'clock that night and tried it three times.

The new deadbolt was brass and shiny, and the old one lay in the flowerbed where he had tossed it.

His duffel bag was gone from the steps.

Every window was dark, and his bike was nowhere on the street.

I put my forehead against the door for the second time that week.

The house was in both our names.

I knew that.

I also knew it would take a lawyer and a month to prove it, and I had about fifty dollars and a truck.

So I drove to the shop.

The bay was dark and smelled the way it always did, of tanned hides and neatsfoot oil.

I turned on the work lamp over the bench and sat down on the floor with my back against the rack.

I didn't cry.

I had thought I might, and I was almost disappointed.

After a while I got up, pulled a hide off the rack and picked up my round knife.

Cutting always calmed me.

I cut a long clean strip, and then another.

I was cutting my third when the door opened behind me.

I didn't turn around.

"It's me," Jesse said.

"I know."

He came in with a folded wool blanket under one arm and a paper sack in his other hand.

"It's Birdie's meatloaf," he said. "She said to tell you she's not sorry about the bacon, she's sorry about the five months. And that you can eat it or throw it at her."

I let out a short laugh before I could stop it.

He put the sack on the bench and the blanket on the stool.

He did not sit.

He stood just inside the circle of lamplight with his hands in his back pockets, looking at the floor.
