Chapter 15: The Board

I was in the boardroom at 11:40 with my old badge still working.

Nobody had turned it off, and I hadn't resigned.

I stood against the wall with my notebook like any other chief of staff.

Ingrid sat at the head of the table in a gray suit.

Seven board members sat down both sides, and none of them met my eye.

At the far end sat Clara, in a cream blazer with a bruised look under her makeup.

My stepfather sat beside her in the golf shirt.

Between them was a lawyer I had never seen, and a stack of paper.

"Mr. Kruszewski has a statement," the lawyer said.

Bogdan cleared his throat.

"I was in that penthouse, you know," he said.

"I saw how Magda lived.

"A fake marriage, a thirty-day deal, a rich man with something to hide.

"My daughter has been trying to warn this company for two years."

"Your daughter was fired for stealing documents," a board member said.

"That's what they call it," Clara said.

She slid a folder down the table.

"These are the invoices."

I went cold from the neck down.

I knew what was in the folder before the first man opened it.
