Chapter 16: The Chair
At ten o'clock the board of Gorski Hotels voted in a ballroom.
Lucas had asked for the open doors himself.
I heard it from Ingrid's assistant at 8 a.m., in a voice full of dread.
"He wants staff in the chairs," she'd said.
"And the press at the back."
So there were two hundred employees on gold ballroom chairs.
There were eleven reporters at the back, with the woman with the braid in the front row.
The board sat at a long table on the stage.
Clara and Bogdan had been given seats in the third row, beside their lawyer.
I sat in the second row, alone, with my notebook on my knee.
Ingrid called the meeting to order.
"Mr. Gorski has asked to speak before any vote," she said.
"The board will hear him."
Lucas walked up the steps and stood at the lectern without notes.
He looked at the room for a while before he said anything.
"I'll make this short," he said.
"Everything Director Kruszewski told you yesterday about the money is true.
"I spent four hundred and twelve thousand dollars of this company's money on a private search.
