Chapter 15: Baby at the Door

The condo was on the eleventh floor of a glass building a mile from the lake.

I stood in front of 11C with Elias a step behind me and rang the bell.

"You don't have to do this today," he said. "The lawyers can send a letter."

"I want to see her face when she reads it."

"What if she doesn't open the door?"

"She will. She thinks I'm the one who has to be careful."

The lock turned, and the door opened on the chain.

One pale-blue eye looked out.

"Baby wasn't expecting," Poppy began in the little voice, and then she saw Elias and shut her mouth.

"Hello, Poppy," I said.

For a moment nothing moved in her face.

Then she slid the chain off, and the voice that came out was the flat one from the school parking lot.

"Come in, then. If you stand in the hall, my neighbors will film it."

The condo had white walls and a gray couch and a long window over the city.

Everything in it was new. I could smell the paint.

A glass of red wine stood on the kitchen counter, half finished, and a plate of sushi sat beside it.

Poppy picked up the glass as she passed and put it behind the toaster, and I didn't say anything.

"Sit," she said. "Not you." She pointed at Elias. "You can stand by the door like a dog."

"I'll stand," Elias said, pleasantly.

I stayed on my feet too, and I looked at the window.
