"Put him on," I said.
"Say please."
Dario's hand closed on the back of my chair.
"Please," I said.
There was a scrape, a mutter in dialect, and then my father's voice, hoarse and furious.
"Don't come. Whatever she says. Giulia, you don't come."
The phone went muffled.
Then Haley again.
"He's fine. A little cranky. His guys from the airport are fine too, they're just sleeping it off in the van."
"What do you want?"
"What I've always wanted. What's mine." She sounded like she was smiling. "Lodestar. Signed over to me. Tonight, in person, on paper."
"And then?"
"And then you get your dad back and go have your little wedding."
"Where?"
"You know the Stratton cross-dock in Red Hook? The one you made Brent lease so the trucks could sit near the port he wanted?"
I knew it.
I had picked the building.
"Ten o'clock," Haley said. "You come alone. No Vitale, no Italians, nobody on the roof."
