Chapter 10: The Owner

I read the first page three times.

Then I turned to the second page, and the third.

Gaming license, Silver Lark Hotel and Casino.

Deed to the building and the land under it.

Fourteen pages of share certificates, every one stamped with my name.

I did not hear Dario come in.

I only heard a cup being set down very carefully on the desk behind me.

"Callie."

"I own it," I said.

My voice sounded like someone else's.

"I own a casino."

"Yes."

"I scrubbed the floor of a casino I own, with the sole of my shoe taped on."

"Yes."

"Since when?"

He stood very straight, with his hands at his sides and his eyes on mine, and I saw him decide not to lie.

"The day after our wedding."

I laid the papers down.

"Before you," he said, "the license sat in Lowell's name. It had for nine years."

"Why Lowell's?"

"Because I can't hold one." He drew a breath. "At nineteen I took the blame in court for something my father did. I served eleven months, and Nevada does not license a man with that record. So Lowell stood in for me. Every dollar of this place went through his hands."

I stared at him.

"He knew everything," Dario said. "The books, the cash, the vault. He was the closest thing I had to family."

"And then you married me."

"And then I married you, and I moved all of it into your name, and I did not tell you."

The room was very quiet.

I could hear the traffic on the Strip, thirty floors down.

"Rule four," I said.

"Ask."

"Did you marry me for the license?"

I needed to see his face when I asked, and I watched it.
