Chapter 12: Not My Signature

Lowell held up his phone so the whole floor could see the screen.

A video was playing.

Dee sat in the back seat of a dark sedan with a man's big hand on her shoulder, and her ponytail had come loose.

"Callie!" she shouted at the camera. "Don't sign anything! He smells like a hospital!"

The man beside her slapped his hand over her mouth.

I felt sick.

"Dee," I whispered.

"The car is in the garage, Mrs. C," Lowell said, in the same warm voice he had used for the soup. "It will stay there as long as you cooperate. Sign the paper in front of everyone, and then we can all go home."

"You asked me to trust you," I said.

"I did."

"You were at our wedding."

"I was." He sighed. "I was fond of you, in my way. I truly was. But nobody is allowed to be fond of a signature."

Behind me, Dario's breathing changed.

I did not turn around.

I felt a light tap on my elbow.

The head of security was at my side, with his head bent low so only I could hear.

"We tracked his phone when it came on at the bank, ma'am," he whispered. "The car's on level B. I have four men on the ramp. Give us a minute."

"How long?"

"Just a moment. Keep him talking."

I picked up the fountain pen.

Lowell smiled.

"Good girl."

"You know," I said, and held the pen above the paper without letting it touch, "I keep thinking about the soup."

The floor was dead silent.

"You came to my door with chicken soup, and you held my hand when I told you about the baby. You sat at my table and watched me sign my own money away while I ate crackers."
