Chapter 19: The Garage

Aldo waited fifteen weeks.

For fifteen weeks the Silver Lark ran full, Rocco sat in a county cell, and Lowell Hatch was a name nobody could find.

Every morning Dario laid his hand on my belly before he said good morning to me.

By the end of the fifteenth week I was thirty-three weeks along and could not see my own shoes.

At two in the morning I left the count room with my keycard in one hand and a cup of ice in the other.

I had told the night driver to wait in the lobby.

I wanted to walk to the car by myself, just once.

The employee garage was on level B, a low concrete room with a hum of lights.

I knew every inch of it.

I had mopped it for a week in a taped shoe.

I knew where the cameras faced, and where they didn't.

I knew the east corner behind the pillar had been dead since the spring.

I walked through it with my keys out.

A white van sat across the exit ramp with its engine running.

It was not one of ours.

I stopped.

The back door slid open, and two men got out in dark jackets, and neither of them was smiling.

"Mrs. Corvino," said the bigger one. "A friend of the family wants to see you."

"I don't have friends in the family."

"He's very sorry about the way you were treated. He'd like you to stay at his house until the baby comes."

"And then?"

"And then he'll take care of the baby."

My stomach turned over.

I did not run for the elevator, because it was thirty yards away and they were fast.

I turned left, instead, toward the pillar.

"Grab her," said the big one.
