Chapter 15: The Last Feast
Isobel's POV
We reached the sea wall as the third horn died away.
Beyond the gate, a hundred wolves stood in the grey light on the road, some in fur and some in leather, and not one of them made a sound.
A tall woman sat a black horse in front of them.
She had Ronan's green eyes and his broken nose, and she looked at the two of us side by side on the parapet like she was counting.
"Four years," she called up. "You look well for a dead man."
"I'm not dead, and I'm not a prisoner," Ronan called down. "Stand your pack down, Sister. I'll come to you by sunset."
"By sunset." She turned her eyes on me. "Is that the Ashmere?"
"That's mine," Ronan said.
His sister looked at me for a long moment.
"She's smaller than I thought," she said. "Sunset, brother. After that we come in and count your teeth ourselves."
She wheeled the horse and rode back to her pack.
Ronan gave a low laugh.
"She likes you," he said.
"How can you tell?"
"She didn't throw anything."
The Great Hall was laid for a feast at noon, because Lucian had ordered it.
Two hundred of the Court sat at long white tables in stiff silence, and nobody touched the food.
At the high table the three Elders sat in their carved chairs, and the eldest watched me come in.
Lucian stood at the head of the hall, in a plain black coat.
He had not worn grey since the night before.
Lenora was carried in on a chair by two footmen, wrapped in a blanket, her face the color of candle wax.
They set her down in front of the Altar.
"Everyone at table," Lenora said, in her small voice, and it carried to the back of the hall. "Please stay. I've kept you from the truth for three years, and I'd like you to hear all of it."
