Chapter 18: Who Holds the Knife

Vicky's POV

At six on Thursday morning I was lying in a paper gown, with a needle in my hand, being asked who I wanted to cut me open.

The board chair stood at the foot of the bed with a folder.

He was a gray, careful man with a golf tan, and he did not look pleased to be there.

Behind him stood the surgical coordinator, a nurse, and a woman from the hospital's legal office who had brought her own coffee.

Lorcan stood against the wall by the door, in scrubs, with his hands at his sides.

He had not looked at me since I woke up.

"Ms. Merrow," the chair said. "I'll be direct. We received photographs last night."

"Of what?"

"Of you and Dr. Hartigan."

"I know about the photographs."

"Then you understand why I'm required to ask."

"Ask."

He opened the folder and did not look at it.

"Are you in a personal relationship with your surgeon?"

I felt every person in the room stop moving.

"Yes," I said.

The legal woman put down her coffee.

"I'm twenty-eight years old," I said. "I went to his door on Tuesday night, and I kissed him, and I stayed. Nobody asked me to. He didn't hold out a hand and say, if you pick me, I'll be nicer to you. I knew what I was doing."

"Ms. Merrow, I have to ask whether you feel any obligation."

"I pay him," I said. "I have the payment plan in my bag. It's three hundred dollars a month, and I'm good for it."

Somebody coughed into a sleeve.

"He told me the worst thing he ever did before I let him near me," I said. "He told me with me standing in a room full of strangers. Then I chose him in writing, with the date, in front of your coordinator. I chose him again this morning when I put on this gown."
