Chapter 21: The Lot

The dealership held its Saturday sale under a white tent, with balloons on the antenna of every car.

Lorcan parked at the edge of the lot and came around to open my door.

I got out slowly, one hand on the pillow, one on his arm.

Biscuit jumped down after me in his SUPERVISOR bandanna.

The night of the trivia, I had used Bree's second phone to text the Tampa number, one line.

I'm Vicky. She did it to me too. If you want to talk, I'm listening.

Nobody had answered yet.

Under the tent, thirty folding chairs had been set in rows, and eleven of them held men and women in their Saturday clothes.

They had come for the announcement the sales manager had put in the mail.

He stood at the front with a microphone and a folder. He was a heavy, weary man with a name tag that said MANAGER.

Dillon stood two steps behind him, in the suit he wore to his sister's party, looking at his shoes.

And beside the manager, with her hands folded, stood Bree.

She wore a soft green dress and no apron. She had her hair down.

She looked like the nicest person in the tent.

"Folks," the manager said, "I want to tell you what happened, and I want to do it plainly. Between April and last month, one of my salesmen took your deposits and kept them. I found out three weeks ago."

The crowd murmured.

"Every one of you has been made whole. I want you to know how." He turned a hand toward Bree. "This young lady is a friend of the family. She heard about it and she bought a cashier's check for each of you, out of her own pocket, so none of you lost a dime."

People turned in their chairs and looked at her.

Someone started to clap.

It spread. A woman wiped her eyes. An older man in a veteran's cap said, "God bless you, honey."
