Chapter 10: Flour
The Portuguese bakery on Acushnet Avenue opens at six, and by half past the line goes out the door.
I stood in it on Monday morning in my slicker with an hour before the shed, because I wanted a sweet roll and nothing else in my life that week was simple.
The date had not moved.
My mother had been wrong, or the driver had lied, or somebody wanted me awake.
I did not know which, and I had decided to buy bread and think about it.
The woman at the counter slid a bag across, and I turned from the register.
Tomás was standing in the door.
He had been waiting.
His hair was wet and he had a gold chain at his throat, and his hands were shaking in the pockets of his jacket.
"Zia," he said. "Two minutes."
The whole bakery went quiet.
Nine people in the line, all wolves, all studying the pastry case.
"Not here," I said.
"Then in the back. Please."
I did not want to go.
But the owner had already lifted the flap on the counter, because he was a decent man and did not want it in his front room, and I walked through.
The back smelled of yeast and hot sugar.
Tomás followed me in and shut the door.
Flour sacks were stacked to the ceiling, and a baker's rack held rolls rising under cloth.
"I fucked up," he said.
"Yes," I said.
"I know I did. I never meant it to be you who found us. I swear to God."
"You gave Bianca a key."
"I didn't. She had one," he said.
"From where?"
He opened his mouth and shut it again.
"The key came with the apartment," he said slowly. "A man at the plant gave it to me. He said I should have a spare."
"What man?"
"It doesn't matter." His face twisted. "Listen to me. My brother is going to use you."
