Chapter 20: Snow

Duarte's POV

She sent for me on the first night of snow.

It was a text, four words, at eleven.

*Chandlery. Now. Bring nothing.*

I walked down Union Street through the first flakes with my collar up and my hands bare.

My wolf walked beside me under my skin, tall and black and silent.

The loft was cold.

The lantern burned on its barrel, and the beams were white at the edges where the frost had come through the slates.

She stood in the middle of the boards in her father's coat with her hair down.

A coil of mooring line lay at her feet, the soft old kind, and beside it a pair of her own work gloves.

"Close the door," she said.

I climbed up and drew the hatch behind me.

"Term six," Zia said. "You asked for it back."

"Yes," I said.

"I'm changing it."

My chest went tight.

"Your hands stay where I put them," she said. "Until I say. And then, tonight, they go where you want."

I did not understand her.

I stood still and waited, and something I had kept chained for ten years lifted its head.

"I want to see what you do," she said, "when nobody's holding the chain."

"Zia."

"I'm not asking for the wolf." She took off her coat and laid it on a barrel. "I'm asking for you."

She wore a plain gray wool dress and her boots.

She undid the belt at her waist and let the dress fall open down the front.
