Chapter 18: Peggy Goes on Air
On Wednesday morning my mother came downstairs in her church cardigan with her hair pinned and her good glasses on.
"The morning show called Maura's phone at six," she said. "They want me live at eight."
"Mom, you have a gag order."
"I have a piece of paper," Peggy said. "Maura, tell him."
Maura had her phone to her ear and a pen in her hand.
"My lawyer says a filed order is not a signed order," she said. "The judge doesn't hear it until Thursday."
"Then I have until Thursday," my mother said, and put an egg in the pan.
I opened my mouth, and she pointed the spatula at me.
"I raised nine hundred kids on cafeteria trays," Peggy said. "I know how to talk to people who aren't listening."
By seven-thirty we were in the lobby of the local TV station on Wilmington Pike.
The studio was one room with a gray backdrop, a single camera and a camera operator in a faded Reds cap.
Peggy sat in the chair under the lights with a microphone clipped to her collar.
On the monitor, the national host looked down from New York in a pink suit, smiling the same smile she'd used on Lena.
"We're joined this morning by Peggy Burdick, mother of the man at the center of the Montague story," the host said. "Mrs. Burdick, let's start with the skillet."
"Let's not," my mother said.
The host blinked.
"I'd rather talk about my husband's workshop," Peggy said.
"Of course, but first, the viral video. Do you regret it at all?"
"My husband built that shop with his hands," she said, over her. "He ran it forty years on a bad back, and when he died, he left it to our son."
