Chapter 22: The March
The king's officer came up the King's Road six days after the fire, with thirty men and a cart with iron rings in its bed.
The rings were for me.
He was a stiff, red-faced knight in the king's own colors, with a paper in his fist.
Penhal's yard was full of other people's horses.
The old Lady of the North had stayed, with forty of her riders, because she said she wanted to see how it came out.
Her men had walked the Grey Company down to the coast at spear point, three hundred men with no swords between them.
The captain hadn't gone with them.
He was in the cellar under my chapel, next to the archer, and they didn't get on.
The officer reined in by the well and looked down at me.
I was standing on the hall steps with Gwenn on one side and Enora on the other.
Erwan stood below me with his left arm in a sling and his bow in his right hand.
"Maela, called of Penhal," the officer read.
"By the king's order, at the complaint of His Highness the crown prince," he read.
