Chapter 12: The Number Said Aloud

Laz's truck was parked on the church side of Pinellas Avenue, under the cross, with the engine off.

I got in and shut the door.

The white dome of the church stood over the windshield, going pink in the late sun.

He came out of the kafeneio a minute later, alone, and walked across the street without looking either way.

He got in beside me.

He put both hands on the wheel and did not start the truck.

"I'll ask you once," I said.

"I don't want the voice you use for the town.

"What did my brother do?"

"Eight hundred ninety-three thousand, four hundred dollars," Laz said.

I closed my eyes.

I had known it since the ledger.

I had known it, I think, since the bold box on a screen at six in the morning.

I had put it down somewhere and walked away from it.

"Say the rest," I said.

He said it.

He said it the way he said everything, in short plain sentences, looking out through the windshield at the dome.

Nikos had moved the money out of the fish house in pieces, every Sunday for two years, through a supplier that did not exist.

He had done it well enough that nobody noticed until an auditor was booked for the last Monday in April.
