Chapter 14: What Sienna Brought

On Sunday morning, someone knocked on Heidi's door at a quarter to seven.

I was on the couch with a blanket, thinking about a chair in a hotel room.

I did not want to stop.

Heidi opened the door on the chain.

"No," she said.

"Please," said Sienna.

I got up and went to the gap.

She was in yesterday's blazer with her hair pulled back in a clip.

She held a manila folder against her chest with both arms.

There was no coffee in her hands this time.

"Two minutes," I said. "In the hall. Heidi stays."

"I'm staying either way," Heidi said.

Sienna stepped in and stood on the mat with her shoes together.

"Keaton's lawyer cut off my email on Friday," she said.

"He forgot the old forwarding rule on my phone. It copied me on everything until this morning."

She held out the folder.

"I'm very good at not asking," she said. "So I read it all, and I asked myself what I'd do if I had asked."

I took the folder and opened it on the arm of the couch.

The first page was an email from Keaton's lawyer to Keaton, sent Wednesday night.

It said a retired physician had agreed to examine June Hallam at Maple Court.

It said he would state that she lacked capacity in the winter she wrote her letter.

"She wrote it before she was ever tested," I said.

"He's never met her," Sienna said. "He's been paid to look at her chart and her face."

The second page was Keaton's answer, sent at eleven that same night.
