Chapter 9: Section Four

I took the brown box out of my bag and held it up where the whole atrium could see.

"This is the founding agreement of Hallam Freight Systems," I said. "Keaton told you it was an old paper that I signed as a kid."

"Tess," Keaton said.

"Section four. The investor, Jessamine Odell, shall receive three paid days of leave each year, to be spent with June Hallam, for as long as the company exists."

The rows went still.

"I'm the investor," I said. "My father died when I was nineteen. His life insurance was a hundred and eighty thousand dollars."

Keaton took one step back from the railing.

"I was told it went to the hospital," I said. "It went into the first bank account this company ever had."

Somebody in the third row said a quiet, "Oh my God."

"Eleven percent is what I got for it," I said. "The days off weren't a favor. They were mine. He grinned at me for seven years, and he took my father's money and called it a favor."

"That isn't how it was," Keaton said. His voice had gone high. "Tess, my mother set that up, I was twenty-two, I didn't know what was in it."

"You signed the page."

"I didn't read it."

"Then you fired the investor," I said, "because you didn't read the page."

Sienna turned and looked at him.

I had never seen her face with nothing arranged on it.

"You told me she had nothing," she said, so softly I barely heard it. "You told me she was a loose end."

"Sienna, not here."

"You said she had nothing."

The woman I'd trained my first year stepped out of the second row.

"Keaton," she said. "Is that true about her dad?"

He didn't answer. His mouth was working.

"Eighty families," I said. "He's right about that. I know every one of your kids' names, and I'm not going to be the reason your bonus doesn't come."

I looked at the landing.
