Chapter 13: Dinosaurs

Harrison's text came on Saturday morning, and it was the longest one he had ever sent me.

Celia and Caleb moved into a furnished apartment in Brookline last night. It has a working heater. Caleb has asked for you four times since Thursday and wants to show you a drawing. One hour at your place, with me in the room. You can say no, and I won't ask again.

I read it standing at the counter with a cracker in my hand.

I thought of a different text, on a different phone, in the back of a car by the river.

Please come home.

I wrote back: Ten o'clock. The door stays open.

They came up the stairs, because Caleb wanted to count them.

He counted forty-one, out loud, and got two of them wrong.

Harrison stood behind him on the landing with a paper bag of apples and a thin picture book under his arm.

I knew the cover before I could read it.

It was the dinosaur book.

"Hello," Caleb said, looking up at me with his father's eyebrows pulled together. "Are you the baby lady?"

"My name is Thea."

"That's a good name. It has a T like Triceratops."

"It does," I said. "Come in."

He walked straight past me into the bare front room and turned a slow circle.

"Where's your stuff?"

"I haven't bought it yet."

"You don't have a couch." He sounded personally worried. "Where do you sit?"

"On the floor, mostly."

"Good," he said, and sat down on it.
