Chapter 17: Prayer Requests
The Tillman pew was the fourth from the front on the left, and I had not sat in it since the night of Daisy's party.
Jesse walked me down the aisle to it on Sunday morning with Daisy on his shoulders.
Every head in the church turned.
He did not look at any of them.
He sat down beside me, took off his hat, and put his arm along the pew behind my back, where everyone could see it.
I kept my eyes on the hymnal and my hands very still.
"You don't have to do this," I whispered.
"Yes, I do."
Lottie came in late, in white.
She had curled her hair again, and she had Birdie by the hand, in a little smocked dress with the horse tucked under her arm.
She took the pew directly across the aisle from ours.
She smiled at us, and nobody smiled back.
The sermon was about the lost sheep, and I heard none of it.
At the end, the pastor opened the floor for prayer requests, as he always did.
Lottie stood up before the pastor had finished the sentence.
"Pastor, may I?"
"Of course, Lottie."
She faced the congregation with one hand on Birdie's head.
"I only want to ask for your prayers," she said. "My little girl has been sick. Her lungs. The doctors say she may need a specialist in Billings, and the bills are piling up. I've had to ask for help, and I'm ashamed. There's a jar at the church door."
She wiped her eye with one knuckle.
"I'm asking you to pray for this child, and for the woman who took her from me in the night. I'm asking you to pray that she'd give back what isn't hers."
