Chapter 18: Cal Says Sorry
Cal showed up at Nate's apartment that night with a pizza and a speech.
He had practiced the speech.
Jesse could tell, because he stood in the doorway holding the box.
He began before anyone said hello.
"I owe you both an apology, and I'm going to say it in order."
"Cal," Nate said.
"Let me finish, or I'll lose my place."
Nate shut his mouth and held the door wider.
Cal walked in and set the pizza on the table.
He did not sit down.
"Nate. I told you to stay away from my brother, and I said you always leave."
"You were right once," Nate said. "I did leave."
"I was wrong about why." Cal swallowed.
"You left a place that had everything, and you came to a pool with a leak.
"That's the opposite of leaving."
Nate looked at the floor, and his ears went red.
"And I told Jesse to send you back," Cal said.
"I told him to decide your life for you, because I was scared.
"That was a rotten thing to ask."
"You didn't know."
"I should have asked what you wanted before I told anybody what to do." He turned. "Jess."
