Chapter 22: Graduation
Commencement was on the first Saturday of May, on the Halbrook quad, under a sky as blue as the pool.
Jesse sat in the family section with Hank beside him, holding a paper program he had folded into a fan.
Eight hundred graduates in green gowns filled the rows of white chairs on the grass.
He had found Cal in the third row from the front, tall and red-haired, with his mortarboard on crooked.
Nate was two rows behind him, in the same green gown, and every few minutes he turned and looked at the stands.
Jesse always looked back.
"You two are disgusting," Hank said.
"You love it."
"I film it. That's not the same thing."
The dean read the names, in order.
When he reached the B's, he paused and looked up at the stands.
"Nate Brandvold. Chemistry, summa cum laude."
The thirty swimmers in the family section stood up at once.
Somebody had brought an air horn.
On the stage, Nate looked startled, then laughed, then shook the dean's hand and held up his diploma toward Jesse, one-handed.
