Chapter 24: Always
The sleeve was thin brown cardboard, bent along the old coffee ring.
Jesse's own handwriting ran across the front in black marker.
His number, and a smiley face, and the words Call me if you want.
He had written it with a shaking hand, last October, in a hallway at Cal's building.
He turned it over.
On the back, in blue pen, in a hand he knew from a hundred lab sheets, someone had written:
Me too. Since this weekend.
Jesse read the lines again.
Then he sat up on the bare mattress with the sheet around his waist, and he held it out.
"Nate."
Nate was kneeling beside his jeans, with his wallet in one hand.
He saw what Jesse was holding, and the color rose up his neck.
"Oh," he said.
"When did you write this?"
"That night.
"At Cal's." He sat back on his heels.
