Chapter 10: Day Plus Seventeen
I sat down on the floor of Clara's room.
I didn't mean to. My knees just quit.
Clara leaned over the rail and looked down at me.
"Are you crying or laughing?"
"Both."
"That's weird."
"Your blood is my blood now."
She thought about it.
"Do I have to like coffee?"
"Not yet."
By noon the whole unit knew.
By two the mom across the hall had organized a party, which meant she'd walked door to door with a legal pad.
"Seven o'clock," she told me. "Your door. Everybody brings something. You bring nothing. You've done enough."
"I don't have to do anything?"
"You have to stand there and be happy. Can you manage that?"
"I'll try."
"Try harder. You've got that face again."
At seven the hallway outside room nine was full.
The dad with the toddler brought a bag of clementines.
The grandmother from the end of the hall brought a card signed by every kid on the floor, in crayon, marker and one fingerprint.
The girl who only ate pink things wore her paper crown, which was now held together with medical tape.
The boy across the hall had dragged his IV pole to the family lounge.
He was hammering out "Happy Birthday" on the donated piano, one finger at a time.
"It's not my birthday," Clara yelled through the glass.
"It's your blood's birthday!" he yelled back.
Matt came on shift at seven, took one look at the hallway, and sighed.
"This is a fire hazard."
"You're the fire marshal after four," I said.
"I'm everything after four." He looked at the crowd. "Fine. Twenty minutes. Nobody touches the door. Nobody coughs. If you have to cough, you go cough in the stairwell like an adult."
