My Daughter Is Dying, and My Husband Is Saving His Lover's Son novel · Chapter 4 of 32

Chapter 4: Soccer Saturday

Brad looked at the corner of the screen.

I watched him read it.

I watched him read it again.

"Lots of kids are born in March," he said.

"On the twelfth? The same year as Clara? With a port on the right side?"

"Ports are always on the right side."

"That's her hip, Brad. That's the scan from January, when she relapsed. You were in Cleveland that day."

He took the phone back and held it against his chest.

"Tasha wouldn't do that."

"Call her. Right now. Put her on speaker."

He did, which surprised me.

She answered on the first ring, in the soft, sad voice.

"Brad? Is everything okay? Is Clara okay?"

"Heidi says Caden's scan is Clara's."

There was a pause just long enough to be a pause.

Then Tasha started crying.

"The clinic sent me a sample image," she sobbed. "For the page. They said I couldn't post his real files for privacy. I didn't know whose it was. I'd never use a sick little girl. Brad, you know me."

"I know," Brad said. "I know you wouldn't."

The woman at the end of the table stood up and left her food.

Brad hung up and looked at me like I'd made Tasha cry on purpose.

"There," he said. "Satisfied?"

"She said the clinic sent her a picture of my daughter."

"She said she didn't know!"

He walked out of the lounge.

He didn't go down the hall to Clara's door.

He went to the elevators.

They discharged me on Monday with two units of somebody else's blood in me and orders not to lift anything heavier than a coffee.

I moved into the recliner by Clara's bed.

By Saturday I'd learned three things.

Hope for Caden said he was "too weak to stand most days."
