Chapter 5: The Double Doors
The comments called me a monster.
They called me fat, which I'm not, and old, which I'm not either.
Somebody found my bakery's page by midnight.
By one o'clock it had four hundred one-star reviews from people who had never eaten my cake.
"Crown Cakes owner screams at kids with cancer."
"Bet she poisons the frosting."
By morning my phone had nineteen new emails.
Nineteen cancellations.
A first communion. Two retirements. A gender reveal I'd already bought the blue food coloring for.
The last one was a wedding in May.
"We just don't feel comfortable," the bride wrote. "We hope you understand. Please refund the deposit."
I refunded the deposit from my checking account, which had six hundred dollars in it.
Clara was asleep.
I sat in the recliner with my knees up and the phone in my lap and read the comments again.
I couldn't stop.
Somebody had found our address.
Somebody had found Clara's school picture from kindergarten, with hair.
"Is THIS the kid she says is sick? She looks fine to me."
At ten past four the glass door slid open.
Matt came in with his reading glasses on his head and a clipboard he didn't look at.
He checked Clara's pump.
He checked her temperature with the forehead scanner.
Then he held out his hand to me, palm up.
"Phone."
"What?"
"Give me your phone."
"Why?"
"Because you've been reading it for seven hours. I can see it from the desk. The glare makes you look like a campfire story."
"Somebody posted my daughter's kindergarten picture."
"I know. The day nurse showed me. Then I made her delete the app." He kept his hand out. "Unit rule. The internet isn't allowed past the double doors."
