Chapter 23: Calder Street

"Opal," I yelled. "Opal!"

The apartment was small. It didn't take long.

She wasn't in the sewing room. She wasn't in the bathroom.

Her good cardigan was still on the hook by the door.

She'd gone out in her nightgown, in November.

Doors were opening up and down the stairwell.

The young father came down in his boxers with the baby monitor in his hand.

"I heard somebody singing," he said. "On the stairs. Around five. A man."

My whole body went cold.

"What was he singing?"

"I don't know. Some old song. He had the words wrong."

I looked at Malphas.

"Her husband," I said. "He used to sing on the stairs when he came home from the bakery. At six. Every morning. So she'd know it was him."

Malphas's face went very still.

"He's been dead twenty years," I said.

"Andras doesn't need the man," said Malphas. "Only the voice."

"She walked out to him."

"Past my door," he said. "My wards keep things out. They don't keep anyone in."

The big one had his nose on Opal's slippers.

He lifted his head and huffed once, and went for the stairs.

The other two went after him.

We followed the hounds through the Arts District in the gray dawn, me in Malphas's shirt and his coat, him in nothing but trousers and bare feet.

Nobody stopped us. People looked at the hounds and crossed the street.

By the second mile, I knew where we were going.
