Chapter 21: The Hunt
Santino's POV
My brother had one thing he could not leave without, and I found it by asking where a man hides a thing he cannot keep in a house.
Gemma had gone with the captains to every airport road and bus depot in Staten Island and Jersey.
I took the yard.
Every gate in Port Newark is mine, and I shut all of them from my desk with one call.
No truck moved.
No container left.
Nothing with Balestra on its paperwork would cross water until I said so.
Then I sat in the truck with the engine off and thought about Dario.
He would not run to a boat, because I held the boats.
He would not run to a friend, because he had none who owed him more than they feared the table.
He would run with cash, a passport and the book.
The book he had.
The cash and the passport were somewhere else.
His study safe had held two passports in names I did not know and a thin roll of money.
It was a decoy.
A man who kept a murder in his safe would keep the real money where nobody went to look.
Where did Dario go, alone, once a year, with his drivers sent away?
I had watched him do it every autumn without a question.
He took flowers.
He took a trowel.
I had thought, God help me, that my brother was a sentimental man.
I started the engine.
The cemetery where Alberto Sartori lies sits on a hill above the Narrows, with a gatehouse and a night caretaker, an old man who knew every family by the date of the burial.
