Chapter 21: Harlan Pays
I took the paper out of my father's hand.
It was a release, one page, on cheap letterhead.
It said that on October twelfth I had agreed to give Harlan Hagedorn full authority over Hagedorn Marine for life.
At the bottom, in blue ink, was my name.
I looked at it for a long time.
"That isn't my signature," I said.
"Honey, you signed it at the tower."
"I didn't sign anything at the tower. I put the certificate in my pocket and walked out."
His lawyer stepped forward and cleared his throat.
He was thin, with the soft hands of a man who billed by the quarter hour.
"Ms. Hagedorn, the document is notarized."
"By whom?"
"I'm not at liberty to say."
"Look at the M," I said.
I held the page out so the foreman could see it.
The capital M in Matilda began with a loop, fat and curling, that rose high and came back on itself.
I had seen that loop on a birthday card for fifteen years.
I had seen it two weeks ago, on a cream-colored RSVP.
"I write my M like a bolt," I said. "Two straight lines and a V. That's Blair's hand."
The lawyer took the page back.
