Chapter 24: Anniversary Again
On Friday afternoon the whole yard stood on the dock with crowbars.
It was a gray, windy day, the lake slapping the pilings, and the old boards groaned when the foremen pried them up.
The sheriff was there in work gloves, and so was Joy, in borrowed boots.
Lorne knelt at the third bench post with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
I stood behind him with my hands in my cardigan pockets.
"It might not be there," he said. "Dina said Rory laughed about it for years. He might have lied."
"He might have."
"He might have taken it."
"Lorne." I put a hand on his shoulder. "Pull up the board."
He set the bar under the plank and leaned his whole weight on it.
The wood came away with a wet crack, and a gust of cold air came up from the gap.
He bent and looked.
The foremen had gone quiet.
The only sound was the water.
"I see something," Lorne said.
His voice was very small.
He lay down flat on the dock, one arm into the dark between the beams, up to the shoulder.
