Chapter 14: Four Things

By eight o'clock, two hundred reporters filled Harbor Street.

Caleb stood at the bottom of Skyward's steps with Bernard at his shoulder and four guards in front of him.

Cameras pushed in from every side.

"Mr. Merrick, did you leave a man to die?"

"Is it true you bought your way out?"

"Where is your wife, Mr. Merrick?"

He kept his eyes on the glass doors at the top of the steps.

"I'll answer you," he said, "but not yet."

The doors opened, and Nina walked out alone.

She wore a black blazer over a white shirt, with her curls pinned up and her mouth set hard.

She came straight down the steps, took the microphone out of a startled reporter's hand, and turned to face the street.

"Good morning," she said.

"I'm Nina Tiernan, and I run this company. I have four things to say, and then I'll take your questions."

The street went quiet.

"First, the car in that clip belongs to Caleb Merrick. Nobody has ever denied that."

"Second, the driver's seat has been blacked out. Someone cut a face out of that video, and the person who cut it knows whose face it was."

A reporter in the front called out, "How do you know?"

"Because I can count frames. The clip starts two seconds after the engine note changes, and it ends before the car stops. Whoever posted it did not want you to see the middle."

She waited for the murmur to die.

"Third, Skyward's lawyers sent a demand to every platform at six this morning. The full video exists, and it will come out."
