Chapter 8: The Empty Chair

Two days after the midnight in Nina's office, Carolyn's surgery ended at noon on Thursday, and the surgeon came out smiling.

By Friday morning she was sitting up in bed asking for the television remote.

Caleb kissed her forehead and told her he had a meeting.

At nine o'clock he sat in the back corner of Skyward's glass boardroom, in a new black suit, with a notepad on his knee.

Nina had introduced him to the staff as a junior analyst on loan from the legal team.

Bernard sat three chairs away with a folder and a face that gave nothing.

The head of the long table held an empty leather chair.

A brass nameplate in front of it read: The Owner.

Chantal and Desmond came in at five past nine.

She wore a navy suit and her hair in the tight knot, and she held a single pen.

Desmond strolled behind her, handsome in a gray three-piece, with a laptop under his arm.

"Ms. Tiernan," he said.

"Desmond Ashburton. We spoke by phone. This is Chantal Brannigan, my fiancee and the CEO of Brannigan Group."

"I know who she is," Nina said.

She did not stand.

Chantal looked at the empty chair.

"Is the owner joining us?"

"He may," Nina said.

"Please begin."

Chantal opened her mouth, and her voice was steady.

"Brannigan Group builds logistics software. We move eleven percent of this country's freight, and we are asking for thirty percent of your logistics division."

"At what price?" Nina asked.

"Fair value."

"Which is?"
