Chapter 12: Lights Off
Sam moved without hurrying.
He stepped sideways so that he was between me and the SUV, the way he had on Second Street.
"Stay by the rail," he said quietly.
"Who is it?"
"I can guess."
I put my hand in the pocket of my shorts and found my phone.
I opened the voice recorder by feel and pressed the big red circle with my thumb.
The driver's door opened.
The dome light came on, and there was Tripp Gaines, in a fleece vest in August, with his slicked hair falling in his eyes.
He left the door open and the engine running.
"Well, look at this," he said. "Doc Forbes. Making out with the help."
"Hi, Tripp," I said.
He stopped ten feet away. Close enough that I could smell the beer on him.
"You've been busy, Hazel," he said. "Carter says you've been playing games at that clinic. Monkey tests. Cute."
"Carter talks a lot."
"Yeah. He does." He shoved his hands in his vest pockets. "And now you're down here. In the middle of the night. Poking around the trash cans."
"I've known you two years," Tripp said. "You know what you are? You're the girl who sat at the end of the table and laughed at our jokes. That's it. That's all you ever were. You're not some genius. You're a Forbes with a checkbook."
Sam didn't move.
"So here's what's going to happen," Tripp said. "You're going to stop. You're going to let the Appletons see the kid, and you're going to stay away from my family, and you're going to quit dragging this guy around like a guard dog."
"Or what?"
He looked at my stomach.
He did it on purpose. He let me see him do it.
"People fall," he said. "Pregnant women get dizzy. It's a high bridge, Hazel. It's dark. Nobody ever sees anything down here."
