Chapter 13: The Invitation
I turned off the television.
Then I turned it back on, because I wanted to see her face when she said "victims."
She said it four times.
By Friday my father had an invitation.
It came to the house in Chestnut Hill, cream paper, gold edges, hand-addressed by somebody's calligrapher.
Same calligrapher as my wedding cards. I knew her loops.
Dear Friend of the Appleton Family.
They wanted him to be a Founding Donor. Fifty thousand dollars got your name on the program and a table near the stage.
My father read it to me over the phone in a voice I'd never heard him use.
"They want me to pay," he said. "Again. For a party about the kidnapping. That I paid for."
"I know, Dad."
"I'm going to put this in his mother's mouth."
"Don't," I said. "Say yes."
There was a long silence on the line.
"Say what?"
"Say yes. Give them more than fifty. Give them enough to be the biggest name on that program."
"Hazel."
"What does the biggest donor get?"
I heard paper rustle.
