Chapter 16: Tripp
Tripp ran across the parking lot in his socks.
Sam went down the terrace steps two at a time.
I stopped at the top. I was pregnant and in heels, and I wasn't chasing anybody across asphalt.
Tripp reached a silver Porsche at the end of the row.
He had new keys. Of course he did.
He backed out so fast he took the mirror off a Range Rover.
Sam stopped in the middle of the lot with his hands on his hips.
Sam walked back to the steps.
"You let him go," I said.
"I'm thirty-six and wearing dress shoes," Sam said. "Also, I know where he's going."
"Where?"
"Where do you go when you're a grown man in trouble?"
I thought about it.
"His sister's," I said.
He pointed at me. "His sister's."
Sunday afternoon we drove to the shore.
I had ginger candies and the window down.
The detectives drove separately and met the Margate police two blocks from the beach.
I'd only been to the house once, two summers ago, for the Fourth of July.
It was gray shingle on stilts, with a deck across the front.
