The moon circle sat on a flat stone headland above the lake.
Twelve standing stones, older than the house, older than the town.
It was where Westmoor wolves had settled things for two hundred years.
By midnight, the whole party had followed us up there.
Three hundred guests in gowns and suits, standing in the grass under the full moon.
Grandpa sat in a chair someone had carried up from the hall, a blanket over his knees.
Kendrick stood behind him.
He hadn't said a word since Soren's answer.
Odette wasn't there.
The old warrior and another warrior had taken her down to the old ice house under the boathouse and locked the door.
Torin stood at the center of the circle with his jacket off and his shirtsleeves rolled.
He was pale, but his hands were steady.
He'd been the best fighter in the pack since he was sixteen.
He'd never lost a challenge.
Soren took his coat off and handed it to me.
"You don't have to do this," I said.
"He asked in front of his pack," Soren said.
"If I refuse, he'll tell himself for the rest of his life that he could have won."
