Chapter 8: The High Alpha

The whole hall turned to look at me.

Three dozen faces, waiting to see me cry.

I didn't.

"See you tomorrow, Kendrick," I said, and walked out into the dark.

The pack hall was beautiful on Saturday night.

Somebody had strung a thousand white lights from the rafters.

The long doors stood open to the lake, and the water held all the lights upside down.

Three hundred guests.

Every Alpha from the Cascades to the Canadian border had come with his Luna and his Beta.

They stood in tight groups with champagne, all watching the main doors.

All waiting for the High Alpha.

Nobody had ever seen his face.

That was half the reason they had come.

I walked in at eight.

I was wearing my mother's dress.

The silver silk fit me.

The seed pearls caught the lights along my collarbones.

I had pinned my hair up so my left shoulder was bare.

The mark showed clean and silver against my skin.

I heard the whispers start at the door and run ahead of me through the room.

"Is that Juno?"

"The one who pushed the Lark girl?"

"Twice, I heard."

"Look at her shoulder."

"Some rogue, Kendrick said. Some nobody."

Odette was standing near the head table in a white gown.

Torin's mark was supposed to go on her tonight.

She saw me in the dress, and her whole face went tight.

Then she smiled for the crowd and touched the moonstone on its chain.

Grandpa sat at the head table in his best suit.

He looked worse than yesterday.

His hand trembled on his cane.
