Nobody breathed.
The room had gone so quiet I could hear the lake lapping at the dock outside.
Then the old Alpha by the bar bowed his head.
And the whole hall followed him.
Three hundred wolves went down.
Lunas in silk gowns. Betas in dark suits. Waiters with trays.
One knee to the floor, heads lowered.
Kendrick's knee hit the boards so hard I heard it.
Odette sank down in a cloud of white skirt.
Torin knelt too.
He didn't bow his head.
He couldn't take his eyes off the man in the door.
I was the only one still standing.
Me, and Grandpa at the head table, who was too frail to get down and too stubborn to try.
Soren walked up the middle of the room.
He didn't hurry.
His boots were loud on the floor.
Kendrick lifted his head as he came near.
He found his voice somewhere.
"High Alpha," he said. "Welcome. We're... we're honored. I'm Kendrick Westmoor. I wrote to you."
