Chapter 11: Four Minutes
I put on his flannel shirt and walked across the cold floor to the desk.
"You can't sleep either," I said.
He didn't close the laptop.
"Look at the corner of the frame," he said. "Tell me what you see."
I leaned over his shoulder.
It was frame one of forty, the picture of Reid's brother with my wrist in his hand.
The clock in the corner said 11:38.
"That's the first one I took of you," Gideon said. "Now look at the last frame before it."
He clicked back.
It was a picture of the ceremony tent, taken from across the quad, with graduates still crowding the aisle.
The clock said 11:34.
I frowned.
"That's four minutes between the two."
"Four minutes."
"What happened in them?"
"I turned around and saw you on the ground," he said. "Then I stood there. Frame one is when I finally walked over."
The room went very quiet.
He kept his eyes on the screen.
"I told you I came across when I saw it. That was a lie. I was standing at the edge of the lawn with my camera up for four minutes. I watched Paige put the lens in your face. I watched them hold your arms."
"You watched."
"I thought it was a performance."
"You thought..."
"The crowd was laughing, Margo. A girl in the front said it was a senior project. Paige was calling out directions like a director. I've shot a hundred art school shows. For four minutes I told myself I was looking at one."
I had gone cold all the way through.
"I was on the ground for those four minutes," I said.
